Helix Charter High School offers many diverse sports for our students. There are 68 athletic teams, 50% of students play at least one sport and the average GPA of our student athletes is 3.6. Helix has 26 different CIF sports offered and there are two sport social workers available at the moment.
Sports are split into three seasons which are Fall, Winter and Spring. Football, Girls Volleyball and Field Hockey are Fall sports. Soccer, Basketball, Wrestling and Girls Water Polo are Winter sports and Baseball, Softball and Boys Volleyball are Spring sports. These are just some of the six – nine sports available for each season.
LEVELS
Some sports offer Novice – Varsity teams while others just have JV and Varsity. If you play a JV or Varsity sport your sophomore, junior and senior year, it would count as your second year P.E credit. You should have taken P.E your freshman year to complete your first year so if you don’t want to do it again, playing a sport is a good way to get that required second year credit.
ELIGIBILITY AND CLEARANCE
In order to be eligible to play, you need to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. It’s best to keep your grades high and keep up with your school work so that if there’s a time where you fall a little behind, your grade and GPA will still be high, allowing you to still play and give you enough time to get your grades back up to what they were. Even though it’s very time consuming, it’s very important to do well in school as an athlete since it could help with your time and stress management.
To be able to even try out and play a sport, you need to complete the athletic clearance. The HELIX Athletic website has all the information you would need to get your clearance done. Once everything is filled out, make sure to turn in your paperwork to the dog house.
OVERALL
As a student athlete myself, I definitely think getting involved in sports would make your high school experience even better. You get to make new friends and build new connections while playing the sport you love. Being able to represent your school is such a great feeling, especially when you win. Sports are a good way to stay active and a good getaway from all the stress that comes with school. If you’ve ever considered participating in a sport at HELIX, you should 100% go for it.
