High school students make mistakes.
Ms. Trevino, 12th grade principal at Helix, says those moments aren’t just about consequences; they’re opportunities for growth. She believes that every student deserves another chance to learn, improve, and move forward.
“When it comes to working with students, I try to remember what it was like being a teenager,” Ms. Trevino states. “Not everyone is perfect. For some people, it takes three or four chances to get it right.”
Her belief in second chances comes from personal experience. “We all make mistakes,” she explained. “I just want students to do the best they can, and my goal is to help them see their full potential.”
Even though she believes in growth, Ms. Trevino also stresses accountability. “I don’t let many things go without consequences,” she says. “There are no free passes. If you do something wrong, there’s a consequence, but I always try to be fair.”
Over the years, she has seen many students turn things around. “There are tons of students I used to see all the time as freshmen,” she states, “Now I don’t see them anymore because they’ve matured. It takes patience and holding them accountable.”
Ms. Trevino admits that not every student finds her easy to approach at first. “Some students think I’m not very nice,” she says, “But the ones who’ve been in trouble before often feel comfortable talking to me. I try to treat everyone fairly.”
At the heart of her philosophy is a message she hopes every student remembers: “We’re all in the process of learning,” Ms. Trevino states, “When you make a mistake, you’ve earned a consequence, but that’s part of growing up. Even adults are still learning.”
