As we move along in the school year, we also transition into a new season of athletics. Winter! The beginning of winter sports season is always exciting for both athletes and fans alike. It’s a time of intense competitions, entertaining games, and an opportunity to showcase their hard work. We offer so many sports at Helix, so let’s take a look into two sports from this year’s winter se
son.
Wrestling
I first spoke with Coach Krzywicki, ASB teacher and head coach of Helix wrestling, about how he feels about this year’s team.
Coach K’s goals for this season are to” improve upon last year’s results, both collectively and individually,” as well as “maximize the potential in the room.” Wrestling is primarily an individual sport, but in order to succeed, they have to work together during practice to get better. Just like football or basketball, wrestling has team scores as well as individual ones. This year’s team in particular has grown! He’s excited for the growth of our women’s wrestling program. He emphasizes how Helix has “never had as many athletes come out for the team as we’ve had this year.” This year, they’re participating in a different league, the valley league. They’ll go against schools such as Monte Vista, Grossmont, Mount Miguel, and many more. I asked him if there were any schools he was looking forward to wrestling and he replied with all of them! “We haven’t wrestled a lot of those teams in a dual meet for a while, so it would be fun to kind of test ourselves against them.” Helix wrestling has a total of 26 events this year; seven dual meets, six girl’s tournaments, and 13 boy’s tournaments. If you’ve never seen a wrestling meet before, be sure to support our seniors on their senior night. They will be wrestling Grossmont in the gym on Thursday, February 6.
Basketball
I later spoke with Coach Cavazos, Helix First teacher and varsity coach of Helix basketball, about his thoughts on this season’s varsity team.
Cavazos’ goals for this season are for the team to work together as a unit, which they’re accomplishing. He stated how he feels as if this is the first time in a couple years where his players have worked together as a cohesive unit. The team has declared their goal to win eight games with no losses within the league and to win a CIF division two championship. When I asked Cavazos’ how he felt the team was looking so far, he highlighted how they are, “further along than any other team that i’ve ever had here at Helix,” and how close they are to what he envisioned his team to look like. Out of the 26 games that they have this season, Cavazos’ is excited to play teams such as San Marcos, Montgomery, and Torrey Pines so the team can test themselves and evaluate where they stand as a group. Their first home game during school will be the day we come back from winter break. They’ll play Patrick Henry on January 8, at 6 PM at Helix. Be sure to attend at least one basketball game to support our athletes this winter.
Whether it’s the thrill of a victory or the heartbreak of a defeat, sports will always have a unique way of bringing people together; especially at Helix. We offer a few different sports for the winter season such as girl’s and boy’s soccer, girl’s and boy’s basketball, co-ed wrestling, and girl’s water polo. You can find information about their events on the Helix athletics website or the social media accounts of the sport you’re looking for. Make sure to support any of our winter sports teams during their season this year!
