The debate on fashion trends is ceaseless. What was “in” the year prior, may have made its way out of the public eye, and just in time for a new trend to waltz right in! As the year comes to a close, we contemplate what gets to stay in our wardrobe and what no longer serves our identity. With student intel, we report Scotties fashion ins and outs for the new year.

Faux Fur
Faux fur is all the rage as of late and doesn’t seem likely to halt any time soon. Pictured on footwear to hoodies, fur flaunts its versatility across different articles of clothing. Additionally, PETA asserts “faux fur can be a good alternative” for those that enjoy the fur look.Warm and fashionable- the perfect combo.
Dolman Styled Tops
Call it dated, but I’m calling it in. Slouchy dolman tops-bonus points if it has an asymmetrical element- are making its comeback in 2026. Cool and effortless, these loose shirts are perfect for any occasion. Unlike the traditional sleeve, dolman sleeves billow out from the upper arm and taper toward the wrist, earning the nickname “bat sleeves”. It is a timeless piece that will surely become a staple once you try it.
Wedge Sneakers
Height boost but make it fashionable. Various brands such as Isabel Marant, Ugg, and Puma have produced their own rendition of the wedge sneaker in response to public demand. Wedge sneakers are the intersection of practicality and chic design. 
Onitsuka Tigers
Shoes are a man’s best friend- that’s how it goes, right? Onitsuka Tiger sneakers are at the top of the list for affordable and stylish shoes. Originally designed for sports, this footwear brand produces high quality, durable shoes that can be worn for exercise or a stroll. Over time, the brand has adapted more styles for everyday wear. This brand is likely to remain popular going into 2026.
Boatneck
Resembling off-the-shoulder tops, boat neck tops have a horizontally elongated neckline. This is a great alternative to off-the-shoulder tops for those that desire more modesty and a comfortable fit.
Fun accessories
If you long for the final element that will make or break your outfits, look no further. Adding an eccentric accessory that reflects your interests can immediately individualize your look. Recently, I bought a ladybug hair clip from a flea market and it instantly elevated my look. From scarves to belts to meaningful jewelry, invest in accessories that complete your style! 2026 will be the year of timeless accessories.
Denim on denim
This is your sign to try the “Canadian Tux”, as some call it, in the new year. Contrary to popular belief, denim on denim does not clash as long as it is styled with intention. Striking and bold, denim sets are fashionable and practical. With the Canadian Tuxedo, any silhouette of jean bottoms may be combined-from low rise boot cut to baggy denim- to create a complex look. Any denim lovers out there?

Skinny jeans
The vote is in and most agree to steer away from skinny jeans. It’s “bring back the 2000s” until skinny jeans enter. Tight and constricting, the public rules these out of their collective ins for 2026.
Wearing sweats everywhere
People love wearing sweats for a reason- they are incredibly comfy. You can wear them anywhere, but should you? The consensus seems to agree sweats are out and elevated basics are in.
Excessive bows
The fad of putting bows on just about everything in 2023 is out in 2026. Bows have become as over saturated as the millennial mustache.
Birkenstock Clogs
Helix students collectively agree that Birkenstock clogs have got to go. They had their hey-day but its over saturation has made this trend die down quickly. In 2026, expect to see less Birkenstock Clog shoes walking around.
Saggy Pants
No explanation needed. Pull your pants up and invest in a stylish belt.
Barrel jeans
Although baggy silhouettes in jeans have dominated in recent years, the barrel jean ranks last in style. These pants are unflattering on most and Helix students seem to agree.
While fashion trends come and go, remember that personal style always triumphs. You can never go wrong if you let your interests, personality, and story mold your outfits.
